Panic attacks are extremely frightening and that is why more and more people are turning to Hypnosis for panic attacks to help them lead a normal lifestyle and this is why more and more doctors are now referring their patients who suffer from panic attacks to experts who deal with hypnotherapy for anxiety but what are panic attacks?

A serious panic attack can make you feel like you are having a heart attack, they are very serious and very frightening and each year thousands of people are rushed to hospital for a suspected heart attack to be told they are having a serious panic attack. Anxiety attacks for most people seem to come out of the blue, you could be walking along and all of a sudden you could be struck with a Anxiety attack or a panic attack as they are also known. A panic attack and anxiety attack can make you feel powerless, many people who are hit with a panic attack are worried they are going to die, this is not an over exaggeration, people feel this way because of the way they feel when they are hit with an anxiety or panic attack.

Anxiety Therapy Can Help You Overcome Your Anxiety Attacks

A panic attack is an exaggeration of the body’s normal response to fear, stress or excitement. When faced with a situation seen as potentially threatening, the body automatically gears itself up for danger, by producing quantities of adrenalin for ‘fight or flight’. This would have prepared our cave-dwelling ancestors to fight or run away from danger, but it’s much less appropriate to the stresses we encounter today. By using Hypnotherapy for Anxiety you can learn to overcome your stress and anxiety and lead a normal healthy lifestyle.

We all know about adrenalin, where you could be pumped up after scoring a goal for your team or in a pub quiz and you are pumped up with adrenalin with the excitement or you could be playing bingo and you have one number left to win the big prize and your body is pumped up with adrenalin, this is good adrenalin but adrenalin can also have a negative affect on your body.

Adrenalin has the following effects on your body:

  • muscles tense up
  • breathing becomes faster to take in more oxygen, which muscles need to help them transform sugar into energy
  • the heart pumps harder to get blood to where it’s needed
  • blood is diverted to the muscles, away from areas that don’t need it, so you become pale
  • digestion slows down and salivary glands dry up, causing a dry mouth
  • your senses become more alert; the slightest sound or touch provokes a reaction
  • sweating increases.

These reactions to adrenalin can occur in seconds and can occur in pleasurable excitement but it can also happen in negative situations such as a panic or anxiety attack.

When adrenalin floods your body your body can react to it in different ways, it can cause a number of different physical and emotional sensations that may affect you during your panic attack and it is very important that you understand what these include so you have a better understand of anxiety and panic attacks.

These may include:

  • very rapid breathing or feeling unable to breathe
  • very rapid heartbeat
  • pains in your chest
  • feeling faint or dizzy
  • sweating
  • ringing in your ears
  • tingling or numbness in your hands and feet
  • hot or cold flushes
  • feeling nauseous
  • wanting to go to the toilet
  • feelings of absolute terror
  • feelings of unreality, called depersonalisation and derealisation.

When someone suffers from a panic attack or anxiety attack they can feel detached from their body and they can also feel detached from their surroundings, not sure where they are, feeling that everything is strange and unreal. They can feel distant from the world where they can feel unsteady on their feet and feel everything around them is strange.

Anxiety and panic attacks can come on very quickly, they can come out of the blue with symptoms normally peaking within 10 minutes. A lot of panic and anxiety attacks can last for between five and 20 minutes but some anxiety attacks can last up to an hour.

As well as having an anxiety or panic attack during the day you can also have a panic attack in the night when you are asleep. These panic attacks can occur when your body is on high alert and can detect small, normal changes, in your body which your body can then take as a sign of danger. Night-time attacks can be frightening, you may feel confused and helpless.

As mentioned during an anxiety attack or panic attack you may feel that you are having a heart attack and your world is coming to an end, but what you need to know is, although an anxiety or panic attack is not a nice feeling, you need to remember that you will not die. When you feel breathlessness this is part of your anxiety attack but Hypnotherapy for Anxiety can help you overcome your panic attacks and Anxiety attacks.

Why Do Anxiety Attacks Happen?

Anxiety attacks as mentioned are a serious issue that can be helped by using Hypnosis for Anxiety but why do Anxiety attacks happen and what causes panic attacks and anxiety attacks?

Unfortunately scientist and health experts have been unable to find a specific cause for an anxiety or panic attack but what they have found is like most other emotional symptoms, panic is understood to be the result of a combination of biological vulnerabilities, ways of thinking, and social stressors (biopsychosocial model).

According to one theory of panic disorder, the body’s normal “alarm system,” the set of mental and physical mechanisms that allows a person to respond to a threat, tends to be triggered unnecessarily, when there is no danger. Scientists don’t know exactly why this happens or why some people are more susceptible to the problem than others. Panic disorder has been found to run in families, and this may mean that inheritance (genetics) plays a strong role in determining who will get it. However, many people who have no family history of the disorder develop it.

Psychologically, people who develop panic attacks or an anxiety disorder are more likely to have a history of what is known as anxiety sensitivity. Anxiety sensitivity is the tendency for a person to fear that anxiety-related bodily sensations (like brief chest pain) have dire personal consequences (for example, believing that it automatically means their heart will stop). From a social standpoint, a risk factor for developing panic disorder as an adolescent or adult is a history of being physically or sexually abused as a child. This is even more the case for panic disorder when compared to other anxiety disorders. Often, the first attacks are triggered by physical illnesses, another major life stress, or perhaps medications that increase activity in the part of the brain involved in fear reactions.

As you can see from above, what causes panic attacks and what causes anxiety attacks is still not fully understood and scientists are still trying to uncover the secrets to why anxiety attacks happen.

Scientists and health professionals feel that an anxiety attack is caused by a number of physical and psychological factors which include:

Traumatic life experiences

Many of us go through a traumatic time in our life which could be bereavement, an accident such as a car accident and a panic attack or anxiety attack could be triggered a few days or a few months or even a few years after the event.

Genetic link

Having a close family member with panic disorder may increase your risk of developing the condition. However, the precise nature of the risk is not yet known.

Neurotransmitters

Neurotransmitters are chemicals that occur naturally in the brain. It is thought that if you have an imbalance of these chemicals, it may increase your risk of developing conditions such as panic disorder.

Fight or flight reflex

Some researchers believe that panic disorder is closely associated with your body’s natural ‘fight or flight’ reflex. The fight or flight reflex is your body’s way of protecting you from stressful and dangerous situations.

In dangerous situations, anxiety and fear cause your body to release hormones, such as adrenalin, and your breathing and heart rate are increased. This is your body’s natural way of preparing itself for a dangerous or stressful situation.

In people with panic disorder, researchers believe that the fight or flight reflex may be triggered abnormally. In such cases, the body’s normal fight or flight response to excitement, fear or stress may be exaggerated, resulting in a panic attack.

What we do know about anxiety attacks and panic attacks is they are serious, they are causing thousands of people each year to lead a less than normal lifestyle and having to go through unnecessary pain and suffering but by using hypnotherapy for anxiety and hypnosis for panic attacks, this pain and suffering can be stopped.

Short-term anxiety

As well as long term anxiety there is also what we call short term anxiety which we all get from time to time. This could be when you go for a job interview, driving test or an important exam and you start to get nervous.

Short term anxiety can include:

  • Driving test nerves
